Do you have a good routine?
16 Nov
I did something nice and special today. I hope you don’t fall over in your chairs.
I ate soup from a bowl.
You know I’m all about the convenience of a can, but this lentil soup was calling for more today. Sometimes the habits we get into are funny and strange and should be changed (at least once in a while).
I paired the soup with a turkey sandwich on Nature’s Own Bread and a piece of string cheese in the middle. Don’t fear – I am going grocery shopping tonight. We are at that point of “no fresh veggies to be seen.”
I did work while eating but took my time chewing. No more mindless eating at lunch.
Changing Your Routine
When you get down and out, how do you snap out of it?
This is a question I’ve been thinking about for a while, and I think the answer is different for everyone.
What works for me? Getting back into my routine. I blog. I eat good food. I cook. I write. I exercise. I call friends on the phone. I see friends in person.
I live my life the best way I know how.
But what if it’s your routine that’s holding you back?
Have you ever thought about a routine being negative? I don’t mean the idea of routine in general but more – the routine you have.
I’ll give you an example — Let’s take my eating soup from a can scenario. What positive purpose does this serve? Sure, I save a dish. Sure, I don’t have to clean my dish in the bathroom at work (which I hate doing). But it takes away from my dining experience. It makes me feel lazy. I miss that extra walk to the bathroom – a few more steps added to my day.
It’s the small things sometimes that add up to the big picture. The small things can dictate how you are living – what routine you’re setting in motion.
I guess I’m learning not to forget about the small things. Or the big things. And I’m working on a more positive and healthy routine through balanced living.
Have you ever found yourself in a less-than-positive routine? What habit/s did you change?
And on a different note…
I must share this for any woman out there who’s a Steelers fan. Or rather, a Steeler lady.

when im stuck in a rut in a bad routine, i have to remember to put it behind me. move forward with good intentions
YAY I love the Steeler Ladies video!! If only they’d won yesterday
I agree, sometimes routine can be negative (or at the least, neutral). I’m trying to break out of my routine now and it’s really just a matter of taking it a day at a time. My biggest challenge is learning to live with more purpose. If I wake up and wander around without focus, I’ll be forced to rush at the last minute. This morning, I woke up and got right down to business. I was able to walk to work happily and relaxed!
I don’t deal well with change so it takes a lot of adjusting for me.
What do you mean about not eating the soup out of the can ? Like the actual tin can ? How do you warm that up ?
I’ve been thinking about this lately, too.
I don’t have any “bad routines” per say, but there are routines I would like to change simply because I know things could be better…just by changing a few small things.
thanks for the reminder Rose
Good to see other Steelers Ladies in the DC area
Oh yes, that video was quite popular around the super bowl last year.
Yea for breaking out of your rut, Rose!! I have a bad habit of eating off of paper towels instead of plates. Actually, I have a lot of bad routines… it’s easier to make small, gradual changes over time than trying to totally overhaul a routine overnight.
I am so spastic sometimes it’s hard for me to have a routine
I definitely follow a negative routine where I feel I HAVE to eat at a certain time, certain meals. This causes alot of stress and missing out on plans b/c it doesn’t fit in with my structure. I need to learn how to break out of this!
hahaha, I’m not a Steeler lady, but I love my routine! I get so anal about it, that it’s almost bad, especially in winter. I don’t know, something about the shorter days…it helps keep me sane.
I definitely have some negative routines in my life, but the one I am working to break right now is checking my (work) Blackberry first thing when I wake up. It tends to put me in a bad frame of mind while getting ready in the morning, and I want to start my day thinking positively. So that’s this week’s goal – no checking work email until I am on the train.
where do you get your pretty bowls? i love that one!
I think that the easiest way to get out of bad routines is to add good routines to crowd them out.
I’ve been terrible about eating on the run lately, so I have taken to lighting candles at dinner every night–its a small thing, but it makes dinner seem a little bit special and the lighting and blowing out are nice ways to bookend the meal.
I struggle to change my routine with changing situations and that is totally stressing me
I was thinking about this the other day! In the sense that as a society, we are being taught that consistency is good, being sporatic (especially with our diets) is bad. But is there such a thing as being TOO consistent? TOO stuck in a routine? For me, it’s a resounding yes, and the only way to break free is to MAKE MYSELF do something differently. Try something new, PROVE that change is not bad!
Great post
