Adult-Inspired Toast
12 Nov
When I was a child, breakfast opportunities seemed unlimited. Our house seemed to carry boxes upon boxes of cereal. And various babysitters made eggs in any variety. As I’ve grown older – these opportunities remain present, but the stability and consistency of everyday oatmeal makes me feel grounded in routine. That’s why it’s good for me to change things every once in a while.

This breakfast reminds me of my lifelong friend Becky. Her mother babysat me in the summers when I was young. Becky’s house was the neighborhood gathering point – children of various ages. It worked out that Becky and I ended up being the same age. We were instantly best friends.

My dad would drop me off at Becky’s house in the morning on his way to work, and I would nap on the couch until she woke up. Then we’d spend the day together – meal times and all – just playing and goofing around. She loved cinnamon/sugar toast in the morning, and so that is what we ate almost routinely.

This appears to be my adult version of my former youth’s toast taste buds. Not too shabby – a spread of peanut butter, sliced bananas, a touch of cinnamon and a drizzle of honey. Complete.
Tell me a memory you have about toast. If you can’t think of one, just tell me anything!

My best memory of toast: my grandma had a cinnamon sugar shaker that was a shaped as a little boy cartoon. We loved used it on buttered toast. I still love buttered toast with cinnamon sugar!
i’ve been loving my breakfast toast too! almond butter and pumpkin butter, perfection!
Cinnamon-sugar toast was one of my mom’s specialties. Makes me smile thinking about it.
Oh cinnamon toast… it was always a treat when we were home from school, a first “real” food after being sick, and like Jessica, my grandma had the SAME C&S shaker!
When I was little the only time I would eat toast was when I would have sunnyside up eggs, I loved dipping the toast in the yolk!!!!
Toast memory — let me think — my sister and I have an ongoing complaint with my parents because we never had a ‘real’ toaster. We have a toaster oven but we always wanted just a toaster where to bread pops just like in the commercials. Our parents joke with us about how we managed to survive life without a toaster — so deprived haha.
Yeah for Thursday
Hmmm, when my sister and I were younger we would eat peanut butter toast every morning! I still do, sometimes
I used to make cinnamon-sugar toast almost every morning, too!
My favorite toast memory is waking up on Saturday and Sunday mornings to Papa Bender’s French toast. In a word: AMAZING. I loved it with butter and jelly
Childhood treat = Mickey Toast. My parents would make me toast with cinnamon, and use a Mickey Mouse-shaped panini press to “brand” it, so to say
My fondest memory with toast is waking up every morning before school and having either my Mom or Dad make me cinnamon toast to take with me in the car on the way to school. The smell still reminds me of my childhood. I need to visit that toast again!
When I was a little girl, my mom and I would drive down to Chicago to see family, and while we there we’d stock up on the best rye bread in the world. A few days later when we were back home, it was all about rye bread toasted with butter for breakfast. To this day, I still love rye bread!
My favorite memory of toast is having my Mom spread it with butter and top it with cinnamon sugar…best.thing.ever!!!!
I always had toast in the morning when I spent the night with my grandma. Pepperidge Farm bread toasted then with PB and honey on top. To this day the smell of PB+honey reminds me of my grandmother. It is also one of the comfort foods I reach for when I don’t feel well or just need a hug.
Breakfast looks so yummy!
The bananas and cinnamon are a nice touch!
My favorite toast memory is of my grandma. She was also a person who loved a good routine — she ate the same thing for breakfast every morning.
She used to make us peanut butter toast with honey. It was always brownberry wheat bread (it’s where I got my love of whole wheat bread), with Krema natural crunchy peanut butter (before natural pb was all the rage) and honey. Still my favorite way to make toast!
Whenever I had a fever or sore throat my mom and grandma would bring me toasted lavash rolls with butter and honey, with a side of sweet tea that had freshly squeezed lemon juice in it.
I’ve always wondered why I have such warm memories of this, given how I always had it when I was sick.
Cinnamon sugar toast
My mom used to make it for me all the time. Do any current moms still make that? It makes me happy just thinking about it.
I love your posts when you have trips down memory lane
I remember the mornings when my dad used to drop us off at our babysitters. My sister and I would eat the boring, healthy cereal my mum bought us and then when we got to our sitters she’d bake delicious cinnamon rolls for breakfast #2. If only my mum knew! ha.

So cute
My best friend in California, Lorien and I, use to always make cinnamon and sugar toast. It was our favorite breakfast AND snack. Your version looks super tasty
Toast… toast is something my family eats on a cold autumn/winter afternoon during the weekend. With some tea. That’s what comes to me when I think about toast.
i used to love making cinnamon toast, too! It’s been so long.
Piece of bread, pat of butter, cinnamon + sugar. You really can’t beat that for toast.
That cinnamon toast looks great! I love the addition of bananas.
Cinnamon toast is a total comfort food for me. I miss it!
love hearing about your memory
i grew up eating “cocoa and toast” for breakfast almost daily.it was just a mug of hot milk+quik (before it was called nesquik!) and then 2 or 3 slices of chewy white bread toasted and butter slathered on top. i remember that if the butter was a new stick and it wasn’t soft yet we would put the slice of butter between the slices of toast so it would get all melty. hah.. the things i decide to remember, yet i can’t even recall what i did a week ago! have a great day rose!
Oh gosh, you just brought back a memory of my dad’s cinnamon toast that I hadn’t thought of in the longest time! He had the most amazing way of making toast with plenty of butter melted in (of course) and a crazy-good thick layer of brown sugar and cinnamon…I think…come to think of it, I never was able to replicate that on my own! I gues the first problem would be rarely making toast in the first place.
That toast looks delish!
My Mom always made me cinnamon toast when I stayed home sick. Even if I was feeling horrible it was always something I looked forward to.
I always remember coming down for breakfast and either having a pb + banana toast or a cinnamon and sugar toast waiting for me. I love whenever I have them now, the strong sense of love I feel. It always reminds me of my mama!
My sister loved cinnamon sugar toast, I was big on plain old butter. We had the cinnamon sugar shaker that was in the shape of a boy, I forget who made it. I never ate the crust but now it’s my favorite! I seem to remember a disney toaster that toasted mickey’s face onto the toast.
i remember watching a movie with my mom late at night and for a snack i used a piece of marble rye bread made by my aunt and spread a thick thick layer of strawberry jam on it.
tasty.
This is more of a bread memory, but as a kid, my mother would not let me have white bread. So of course, that’s all I wanted. I would go over to my best friend Eva’s house and eat pieces of white bread sprinkled with sugar! I thought it was the best thing since, well, sliced bread. (Okay, that was really corny).
Cinnamon Raisin toast always makes me think of my dad–he used to have some before work every morning:)
