Three Berries in a Peel

11 Nov

I feel like every childhood is marked by the “three peas in a pod” expression. Either you’re one of three, and you’re a pea in the pod. Or you’re waiting to be part of the three, waiting outside, thinking of ways to get in.

Growing up, my cousins and I were of a different breed when it came to the three peas in a pod mantra. I like to think of us as three berries in a banana peel.

I was reminded of this bond over the weekend when my cousin Marissa and I swapped stories on the way to Ohio. She and I were inseparable during our youth. She has a younger brother – Ryan – who we are now close with. During childhood? Thats another story. Even though we belonged to the same peal, our alliances were not the same.

Brothers and sisters fight, and girls always gang up with girls. That sums up childhood for the three of us in one sentence. It was Marissa and I who ate cake icing straight from the can in my grandmother’s pantry. And it was us who left notes for each other under knick knacks above the piano. The bond with Ryan didn’t come until later  - much later – when the three of us were teenagers at least.

No matter how close we were and when, I feel a unique bond with Marissa and Ryan unlike two other people in the world. They grew up with me. We made discoveries together. We began figuring out the world together. We got into trouble together.

The best part? Getting to relive and tell the stories into adulthood. I love when a sentence starts with.. “I can’t believe that was 15 years ago….”

Who are your three berries in the peel? peas in the pod?

Cute post, Rose! My three berries in the peel include myself and my two best friends from college. We definitely had our periods of struggle and separation, but now we couldn’t be closer and even though two of us are in Chicago and the other is in New York, we still find ways to chat together and are planning visits to our respective cities. I can’t wait until 15 years from now when we can relive the memories we are making right now :) Aww!

    Love your oatmeal!

Cute oatmeal :) Well, we lived pretty far away from both of my parents brothers and sisters growing up and moved a few times. As a result, I had a few separate groups of peas in a pod. Two BEST friends when I lived in California and another set of two BEST friends when I lived in Massachusetts.

i always wished i had cousins i was close with. mine are older or younger, so we never spent much time together. but two of my oldest friends (one of them is the one who just got married) definitely make up the other peas in my pod. we all live in different states now, and our lives are so, so different. but when we’re together, that never matters. and i know how you feel about friends. :)

Love this post. My dad, my little sister, and I make a nice three peas in a pod. My mom used to become jealous because the three of us think alike in so many ways.

Such a cute oat bowl & great story to go along with it. I’m not close with my cousins–maybe when we were younger, but not now. I guess the less time you spend with them, and as everyone grows up, it gets awkward? Hopefully it’ll even back out!

I always feel like a part of 3–my brother, sister and I–or–my mom, dad, and i. or my two friends and i. i love groups of friends which = 3. good number i say!

have a nice day rose <3
