Eggs in a Frame

28 Oct

There are two things I remember about 6th grade Home Ec: eggs in a frame and a boy named Brad.

I’m not sure whether Brad was ever impressed by my cooking of eggs in a frame, but every day I hoped that he would be. We’d sit close on the counter, elbows almost touching elbows while I cracked open an egg and he carved a hole from the middle with the top of a glass.

We were most definitely graded on the shape of our eggs in a frame, whether the yolk was gooey or not, how perfect the circle was. Looking back on it now, that seems completely ridiculous. But of course – I didn’t care about the grades.

I just worried about swoon-worthy Brad, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks in town. I’d say that I wonder what ever happened to him, but I heard a few years back through the grape vine.

C’est la vie.

Do you ever eat “eggs in a frame”? What do you call them?

I should note that I was reminded of eggs in a frame once again after seeing them appear on Meghann’s blog, though I think she calls them eggs in a basket, which is also appropriate.

Also, a special thanks to Bill who made these for me while I was in the shower getting ready for work. He’s a sweetheart; I know. :)

I called them ‘eggs in a hole’ when I was little. :)

  2. kat October 28, 2009 at 9:34 am #

My mom always called them submarine eggs… I guess because of the round “porthole”. Yum!

  3. Morgan October 28, 2009 at 9:35 am #

Toad in a hole! I had that for breakfast this morning :)

  4. Mara @ What's For Dinner? October 28, 2009 at 9:37 am #

I totally do! They’re either “toad in a hole” or “egg toast” depending on who made them. i just ran across my version of Brad on facebook… he’s definitely not as cute as I remembered :)

i call them egg in a hole, egg in a basket, or toad in a hole. So good!

so sweet that bill made them for you :)

Yup we made them except we just called them by the totally original name of “egg in a hole”. We made all kinds of stuff and I hated home ec with a passion. I had no desire to sew wristbands or make tuna melts with only a 1/4 piece of a slice of cheese. Jeesh.

These look perfect. This story cracked me up…ahhh home ec. The only thing I can remember making in that class was puff puff pancakes :)

  8. christie @ honoring health October 28, 2009 at 10:06 am #

I call them eggs in a basket of toad/frog in a hole.

  9. Mary October 28, 2009 at 10:14 am #

Yum! Yours look perfect– mine usually turn out a hot mess (still delicious, of course!) We call them egg in a hole (or holes in one), but I’ve heard just about every name under the sun!

I made those the other day, too! Yours look much fancier than mine did :) Hurray for Meghann and her creative ideas and double hurray for Bill and making you breakfast while getting ready for work. That makes me smile.

I like the name eggs in a frame, too!

    Oh Brad…mine was named Ben.

I told Ben about these the other day and he was super excited to try them! I keep forgetting. I think I call them eggs in a basket from Couch Cubicle way back in the day :)

YUM! I used to love this as a kid :-) We used to call in “Bread with the egg” LOL, but I’ve heard of “Eggs in a basket”

Awww Bill – major props to you! :)

I love those! We called them Eggs in a Hole when i was a kid! (which to my dirty grown up mind sounds so dirty!) :)

  15. Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) October 28, 2009 at 10:44 am #

I’m with everyone–I’ve always heard it called egg in a hole or toad in a hole!

  16. verbalriot October 28, 2009 at 10:49 am #

I am YET to have these eggs in a basket/frame but they look fantastic!

  17. Diana October 28, 2009 at 10:51 am #

Those look so good! I have NEVER eaten eggs in a frame (or in a basket, whatever you wanna call them ahah). :P Am I missing something? I probably am, because that sounds soooo good.

  18. Anne Marie @ New Weigh of Life October 28, 2009 at 10:55 am #

I’ve never seen or made eggs in a frame/basket until I started reading blogs :)

  19. Whitney @ Lettuce Love October 28, 2009 at 11:11 am #

Haha I didn’t know what you were talking about until I saw the pics. My dad always makes those. We call them egg in a basket. I had a friend who called them eggie in the middle.

  20. Heather October 28, 2009 at 11:37 am #

Bread is going on my grocery list this weekend to make these – they look delicious!

  21. Ali @ Food, Fitness, Fashion October 28, 2009 at 11:50 am #

I had never seen or heard of them until seeing them pop up on blogs. I will have to try it soon.

PS: so lucky to have breakfast waiting for out when you got out of the shower. ;)

  22. Hil October 28, 2009 at 12:32 pm #

I call them eggs in a nest, too! I used to make those with my mom when I was little. I bet they would be delicious with the whole grain rosemary bread I bought at the farmers market. Hmm…

  23. Lindsay October 28, 2009 at 1:14 pm #

I’ve never had eggs in a frame but I’ve been seeing them a lot lately! I’ll have to give them a try!

  24. Mama Pea October 28, 2009 at 1:19 pm #

We always called them Eggs in a Nest. I don’t like eggs (never have) but I’d always want the round toasties that my mom would fry up in the pan with butter. :)

  25. Sues October 28, 2009 at 2:07 pm #

Ooh yes, I know them as eggs in a basket or eggs in a hole. But for some reason I’ve never made them… strange since I love egg sandwiches so much. Maybe it’s because they canceled home ec right before I got to 8th grade :(

  26. Christina October 28, 2009 at 2:41 pm #

Ha, this is funny that you should ask about this because I make this for my boyfriend for breakfast often. I call it bird’s nest and he calls it eggy toast. We have an ongoing arguement that “your bird’s nest is ready” and then he questions about when the eggy toast will be done. Ha.

Anyways I am a friend of Kelly. She showed me your blog after your Bloomington visit. Hi!

  27. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) October 28, 2009 at 2:41 pm #

    You had home ec?!

I feel like that dish has a bajillion names. I just think it’s cute, whatever name you give it!

  28. Anne P October 29, 2009 at 10:33 am #

Love the trip down memory lane. I’m curious… what did happen to Brad?

  29. Brittany October 31, 2009 at 10:08 am #

I never had these until I made Isaac and he calls them egg in the hole. My best friend and roommate in college called them pop-eyes.

No matter the name they are delish!
