Oh my aching back.

13 Oct

I’m doing pretty well with the Real Meal Challenge. The first couple days were rough because I was in Bloomington, but things have gotten easier since I’ve had a Sunday of cooking.

Lunch was leftover Kugel. It still tastes just as good the day after. Someone asked if this was bland – I will admit that it was, just a bit. I added more salt to mine. You’re also supposed to include fresh dill in the recipe, which they were out of at the store, so I think that would have made a difference too.

Lunch is also always a little better when you have a sweet treat.

My Aching Back

I wasn’t going to write about this because I hate to be a whiner, but I think maybe it would be more helpful to just get it out there. My back hurts. I mean, it really, really hurts. It started in August when my friend cracked my back at a wedding. It hurts when I sit in my desk chair at work, when I’m on the couch and especially when I’m in my car.

I thought that when I went running, it wouldn’t hurt. That’s not the case. It hurts when I do any kind of exercise. The pain is not numbing or out of control. It’s more of a soreness. Maybe an alignment issue.

I have no idea what my health coverage covers since I switched in July. I am going to get acupuncture soon, which might help.

Any tips? Anything sound familiar?

The pain is in my upper back – near the upper shoulder blades and neck.

I should also note I have very poor posture.

Help!

i’m sorry to hear about your back! I would ask around and get some good recommendations for a chiropractor that is covered under your insurance. Nick and I go once a month and I have never felt better. BUT, I would make sure to get recommendations from people you know and trust, just to be sure.

I really don’t have a suggestion but just wanted to say I feel for you because I think back pain is probably one of the most excruciating, uncomfortable things ever…right up there with tooth pain.

I apologize if this is an odd question, but are you fairly well-endowed? I have a lot of back problems in the same area. For me it was related to my chest. I had to get a new running bra, it helped some!

I hope you find some relief soon!

Sorry to hear about your back. That isn’t fun. I don’t have any suggestions, just happy thoughts for the pain to vanish.

Ooh, back pain is the worst. Maybe a chiropractor would help?

Don’t mess around with your back. Seriously. Don’t see a chiropractor. Go to your PHP, describe your situation, have him or her refer you to a specialist, perhaps take an x-ray and an MRI. Be extremely careful when lifting and bending and also back off of the high impact workouts until you figure out what is going on. Just my two cents.

You are way too young to have a bad back! You may have a pinched nerve – but its gone on too long – you should get it checked out soon!

I vote for more acupuncture. I am a long distance runner as well and it has done wonders for muscle soreness. I also recommend epsom salt baths, too. Good luck!

Let me know how the acupuncture goes! I have a lot of pain in my left shoulder/neck area and have tried EVERYTHING – steriods, massage therapy, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, novicane shots….nothing has worked! i’m starting to think a more natural approach may be useful and have been considering acupuncture for a while now. i’d be interested to hear how it works for you.

I bet it’s an alignment issue. The best thing to do is go to a chiropractor and have them realign your back. in the meantime maybe you should try icy hot.

Oh my gosh! I’m dealing with the exact same pain in the exaxt area. I made a chiropractor appointment this morning, but I’m scared to go. I hope you have luck with acupuncture.

Grr, that’s the worst…My back is in near constant pain so I feel ya…

One thing is to take two of Bill’s old socks, fill them with cheap rice (like white rice) and if you have it lavender or some other soothing essential oil (but you don’t need it). Put about 2 cups of rice in on sock. Sew the end, and put the other sock on top facing the other direction and sew that end. Then on your way out the door pop it in the microwave for 1-1.5 minutes and let it rest on your lower back while you’re in the car… or whenever you need it. I’ve had the same homemade one for about a year.

Also, a tennis ball while lying on the floor or on your back while you’re in the car to release tension can help a lot to.

That’s why chiropractors scare me, they can really mess you up- I hope the acupuncture works!

Back pain stinks! Mine is lower, but I know it is just crippling. Try a massage, hot water bottle or heating pad and/or some yoga stretches. If that doesn’t work I would definitely have it checked out, you don’t want it to get worse!

I don’t have any advice, but sorry your back hurts.

oh, poor Rose! I’m so sorry…I really do hope acupuncture helps. It can work wonders. No strenuous exercise, ok?

And psst! Two words for that kugel: hot sauce!

Oh no! Back pain is no fun–I injured it last fall and was unable to run for a while, which sucked, but it really helped to stretch my back every night before bed and sleep with a pillow between my legs.

I hope you feel better soon! Sometimes I get pains in my lower back but they usually go away with stretching. You should go to the doctor!

Your pain sounds very similar to mine…I hope you are catching it early enough! I see a chiro regularly, and have also tried massage therapy. Neither really help…it’s so frustrating. My GP even sent me to a Sports Medicine doctor who thinks it’s from my neck (due to height, posture, sitting at a desk all day, etc) but says even if she can confirm that with xrays (that I continually forget to go get) she’ll probably only be able to recomment more massage and maybe physical therapy.

Gah sorry…I’m sure you don’t want to hear a negative outcome! I’ll look forward to hearing what you find out and if something helps!
