Slices of Life

29 Sep

Andrea recently posted her blog philosophy on photos. The post is really well-written, and there were several lines that struck a chord with me. One especially was when she wrote — “In the background there are little slices of life going on.”

As a food blogger, this is what I think blogging is all about. Sure, it’s mostly about the good food we’re eating and how we’re staying healthy. But more than that – blogging is a way to document our everyday.

This morning, while photographing my recent usual toast, I decided to apply Andrea’s theory to my picture taking. What slices of life are happening in the background of my breakfast?

Above you can see a few things if you look closely:

  • An oven mit hanging on the drawer in the kitchen
  • Wine glasses ready to be filled on the stand
  • Scone, patiently waiting by the door to be let out so he can see his lover (a morning routine at this point)
  • Bright light

Let’s try another one:

In this one, there is a common theme of music – guitars, a microphone string and an organ.

And one more:

You can’t see as much in this picture, but there are a few things:

  • Green bowl as table center piece
  • A wrapper that was once filled with block shots
  • Books
  • Tissues

Normal shot:

And here’s a normal shot I’d take. The colors from the strawberry jam seem to pop, but there’s little life going on here. What you can mostly tell is that I like a variety of placemats.

What slices of life are happening in your photos?

Be sure to check out Andrea’s post. It’s one of my favorites ever in blogland!

What a cute idea. Love scone and bfast looks delicious. Glad you’re still on the PB&J toast kick (although I am missing your pretty oatmeals ;)

Clever! I always try to push objects out of the way when I take my pics, but this is a cute idea. What would be in most of my pics if I zoomed out is piles and piles of mail. 4 semi-disoranized girls in a house = a lot of mail pile-up.

love this post! I’ll have to read Andrea’s.
I normally keep the slices of life in my photos ;)

I love this idea. Some of my favorite shots on blogs are when you can more in the background, it’s like a glimpse into someone’s daily life. I always zoom right in on the food and worry about stray objects in the shot, unfortunately right now my apartment is far from tidy so I don’t think I’ll be doing those kind of shots anytime soon.

I love this :) I’ve been thinking of doing this more, especially now that I’m losing my precious daylight for bfast + dinner pictures!

yummy breakfasT!! I love seeing the side angles and backgrounds in photos! they add a whole different element!!! (My house has to be clean for me to be brave enough though!)

This is a great post! Usually you can’t see what’s going on in my life from the pictures, but I think this is a great concept!

I love this post – I need to go check out Andreas! I always try so hard to position my photographs so I don’t get anything in the background – my messy apartment, shoes on the floor, Guitar Hero. But you are right – those are a part of my life. Who cares if my apartment is messy!

Interesting concept. I love seeing what’s going in the background of OTHER people’s photos, but in mine I’m usually just concerned about hiding whatever pile of crap happens to be in the background… bills, magazines, etc.

    Scone has a lovah?? Nice!

Very cool concept/idea. I tend to photograph my stuff on my white, wooden window sill because it has good lighting. But I should try this, too! I love little Scone and the guitar in the background.

i am guilty of pushing stuff out of the way to make room for a pretty/zen picture without clutter! guilty as charged!

That’s an awesome concept. I’d never thought about it, but it does make a lot of sense. :)
I’ve only started my blog yesterday but I’ll make sure I remember this in the future!
