J-School Nerds for Life, Word.
24 Aug
On Friday, I got an email from an old friend of mine who just happened to be coming to the DC area this weekend. Ashley was coming down to spend the weekend with Melissa – both of whom I met in journalism school. I hadn’t seen either of them in nearly three years, and I think the last time might have been their graduation. Needless to say, it’s just been too long.
I’ve spent more hours with these people than I can count – particularly stuck behind the Mac computers in the school paper newsroom, cursing the upcoming deadline and consistently breaking down. Yep, that job wasn’t the best for my emotions, but we did have fun. Good times.
We decided to meet at Lauriol Plaza in Dupont Circle. I’d never been – but heard good things
More wine. I’ve been trying moderation but it doesn’t work so well as of late.
Bill said this place had really good salads, and then everyone decided to order one. I got the Brazilian salad that included chicken, tomatoes, cucumbers, hearts of palm, onion and zucchini in a balsamic vinegar.
I ate most of the salad and don’t even remember. I was too busy making fun of our old college years and reminiscing about both good and bad times. It’s great to laugh about them now.
Ashley and I couldn’t pass up White Chocolate Mouse Cake. Nope, we couldn’t.
We split it. Look how delicious.
So, picture this. Bill was a long-haired hippy working as the News Editor of the paper, and Ashley was our Editor-in-Chief.
I was the Variety Editor and Melissa was the Managing Editor. Ultimately, we all played a few roles.
I don’t remember any of us being photographers, but times do change.
One thing that hasn’t changed? Everyone has always towered over me. And I’m ok with that.
I wish Ashley lived down here, but I know why she doesn’t
Long story. We had such a good time – yesterday was probably the happiest I’ve been in a while! It’s great to just let it go and enjoy people.

“cursing the upcoming deadline and consistently breaking down. Yep, that job wasn’t the best for my emotions, but we did have fun. Good times. ”
LOL – sounds like me at my television news station
Two-of-a-kind, I tell ya! Me and wine = no moderation allowed. It’s been decided.
You look so pretty in those pictures! I’m glad you had fun with friends…especially j-school nerds!
Ahhh! This post made me so happy! I’m gearing up for my senior year as a J-School nerd at Ohio University. What’s crazy is that my best friend Ashley is going to be the Editor-in-Chief (or HBIC as we say) of our school newspaper, just like your Ashley. Insane. Newsroom = total stress. I am not good with newspapers. Def. a magazine girl!
Woot! J-School represssennt!! I just graduated this past spring. Except I was a broadcast newsie, cursed to carrying around huge cameras and tripods, harrassing my fellow students for sound clips. I didn’t know you and Bill were J-School lovebirds, so cute!!
Cute story! And that cake looks so, so good.
what a fabulous time!!!! no worries my dear – moderation isn’t my friend lately either
some days i beat myself up over it, other days i say – HEY life is too short!!
glad you had such a fabulous time
tut tut. Moderation and wine are two words that do not belong in the same sentence.
It’s okay not to practice moderation when it comes to wine!
Fun times! Great cake too!
i have so many comments about this post lol.
subject a: wine and moderation do not exist in the same sentence in my book. i think i demonstrated this in boston.
subject b: i love your love of old friends. sometimes there is nothing better than just letting it all be and enjoying the company around you.
subject c: i also love your j-school love. although i was too art-y and pretentious back then to be on the nyu paper, in retrospect, i should have done it. your experience sounds fun, in that stressful way.
glad you had a good weekend!
Good times with old friends always put a smile on my face, glad you enjoyed it!
You guys are so cute! Glad you had a fun dinner out.
This post was so sweet! And I had the best time yesterday.
What a cool reunion! I didn’t know you had a background in journalism…someday I’d like to be a health journalist, once I have my RD.
That cake looks AMAZING!
Wow that salad looks so fantastic!
Time with old friends is time well spent.
