A Book for Cat

8 Aug

This is the perfect time to post the book I’ve made for Cat – because I’m currently with her at a wedding! No chance of her stumbling upon this before I give it to her :)

I was inspired this week to work on soft cover books. I feel like I’ve given them a mental bad rap in my head because they are more delicate and don’t seem nearly as time-consuming to make. Well, they aren’t that time consuming – but I find them easier to write in because they fold flat.

A year ago, around this same time, Cat and I went to Paper Source and she picked out a paper she liked. I promised I’d make her a book. Well, it’s been a year and I just now have gotten around to making it. Better late than never! And somewhat in time for her September birthday.

This paper is so Cat. I hope she’ll like this. This is a pamphlet stitch. You can see where I sewed inside.

See how the book lays flat. Sometimes hard cover traditional journals don’t do that.

I’m a fan of this exposed spine. I used twine string for this to give it a rougher look.

I felt like Cat might want a book that closed, and the cover is looser so it tends to not stay in place. I decided to attach a button (as I’ve been obsessed with them lately) with a string. Simple and easy + it looks good.

Materials used: decorative paper, cardstock, twine string, button, super glue, awl

End Result: I think this will be perfect for Cat’s personality and busy schedule.

Next up is a book for my friend Kelly!

Oh, and don’t forget – you can order a specially-made journal or book yourself. Just contact me at onalobsterplacemat [at] gmail [dot] com.

Great looking book! How did you learn to make those? I’d love to be able to do that.

You are a woman of many, many talents.
