If you were following me on Twitter last night, then you know that Bill and I spent the bulk of the night trying to help a stray cat. The first time I saw him, he got away too quickly. Then he came back and found us sitting on a bench. When we inched near him, he ran again. Then on the way into the house, he appeared from under a car.

He’s still out there. We left him some food in the sidewalk, and I’m hoping he got it.

6.23.09 005

Last night was the first time I ever tried to rescue an animal. I must admit, I was hesitant to touch him in case he was carrying something. But Bill and I had a game plan for what we would do.

6.23.09 007

We probably couldn’t have kept Oat (that’s what I named him) due to finances and our small apartment, but we would have taken him to a no-kill shelter.

He really needed some help. Super skinny, and he was roughed up around the ears.

6.23.09 008

He would have been better off there than the streets of DC.

(PS: Is it just me or are stray cats popping up more frequently in blogland? I can think of at least two bloggers who dealt with a situation like this).

6.23.09 003

Sometimes I can’t even get over my love for animals. Honestly, I used to be the complete opposite until we got Scone. I hated being around other peoples’ pets.

Bill asked me if last night is going to be a recurring theme in our life. Maybe.

Do you like or hate pets? Have you ever rescued an animal in one form or another?

    haaa your oatmeal is adorable!
i love animals, but i will say i’m not a fan of cats. actually that’s wrong. i LIKE cats, i HATE their fur with a passion! i’m not allergic or anything of the sorts, i just how their fur manages to end up EVERYWHERE!
BUT none the less i would take one in if it were roaming outside

I couldn’t help but smile at this post! You know how I feel about cats. :) And both mine were shelter rescues. My sister is in school to be a vet and has always drilled into us the importance of adopting animals in need.

We got our dog from a rescue. Does that count?

i love, love, love your oatmeal! it is super cute! i like pets, but don’t have any. i would love to convince the hubby to get a pet, but we haven’t come up with one we mutually like.

haha this oatmeal is so cute! Your kids are going to have the best breakfasts some day…I can just see all the fun you’ll put together for them ;) I LOVE animals. I can never leave a dog wandering on the streets- I always pick them up and check their tags!

I am the worst (or best?) about rescuing animals. I may or may not have once smuggled a stray dog across the border…maybe

  8. lowandbhold July 23, 2009 at 9:31 am #

My first dog was a stray. I was 5 and I named him Spot even though he had no spots. He got ran over though and I cried for weeks!

On of our cats was a stray rescue too, we tried to keep him in the garage the first night because we already had two cats and didn’t think we could handle another. Yeah, he was in the house as soon as he got his shots. His name is Joey, my other cats are Pheobe and Chandler. I never completed the whole gang because that would have made me a cat lady. But there’s still time :)

SO cute! love the cinnamon ears ;) I’m always begging the Mister to rescue a stary, but his stupid allergies prevent it!

I adore animals, though I’m more a dog person than a cat person (I grew up with dogs). My husband and I rescued our dog last year – he’d been in a high kill shelter in Tennessee before he was brought to New England by a rescue organization and his foster mom posted him online. It was love at first sight! :)

I’m sure Oat will find a good home and the food you left for him was much appreciated!

I love pets, though I definitely prefer dogs. Both of ours were rescued from shelters, and now I volunteer weekly at the shelter we got Larry from. I love it.

My cat was an abandoned kitten before my parents heard about her from our vet, and they gave her to me for my 6th birthday! She’s still thriving and as lively as ever, 15 years later :)

I love animals, kittens especially. I once saved a stray cat by feeding it a beef stick and taking it home. Mama D was not especially pleased. I think it had fleas.

Your oatmeal cat is much more Mama D friendly!

I love, love, love animals! We would definitely have a pet if we didn’t live in a no pet apartment. bleh. No cats for us though (Zack is insanely allergic), but as soon as we’re out of here we’re gonna dog it up :)

oh im a HUGE sucker for animals. adopted a dog from the humane society, and when iw as in school a stray cat ran into our house when it was snowing, so we kept it for the weekend, fed it, and my friend’s aunt adopted it. she says its the friendliest sweetest cat shes ever met. loveee

  17. Melissa S. July 23, 2009 at 1:02 pm #

omg that cat totally made my morning.

  18. Tiffany July 23, 2009 at 1:12 pm #

I love your kitty oatmeal! We’re suckers for animals. Our two cats are strays that showed up at our house 5 1/2 years ago.

  19. Cortney July 23, 2009 at 2:42 pm #

I’ve always had pets– dogs, parakeets, a turtle, fish, rabbits (not all at the same time though!). And of course I have my two cats now. So yeah, I’ve always loved being around animals, though my patience has deteriorated with little yippie dogs.
As a kid, I would try to take in any strays possible. I always had cats following me home, and at one point my dad and I raised a nest of baby rabbits that our terrier had dug up.

I’ve been wondering recently about the ethics of taking in some strays. There’s a grey cat living near Jared’s place that’s lived outside for about two and a half years. She’s healthy, the neighbors feed her, and she hates to be confined. I don’t think I’d be doing her a favor by taking her to a shelter. She does need to be fixed but I don’t have the disposable income to take care of that.
C’est la vie, I’m extremely distracted right now so I hope this made sense.

your oatmeal bowls are becoming more genius by the day! you’ve got to publish an oatmeal photo book someday.

i’m not an animal person at all, but i do love cats. but it has to be another person’s – not my own!

  21. HeatherBakes July 23, 2009 at 2:55 pm #

    That bowl is freaking adorable.

Oh god, I’m definitely an animal person. Stray dogs and cats kill me (I’ve made Brian drive around looking for stray dogs I’ve seen while on runs) and I have to leave the room when that SPCA commercial comes on TV. Actually, Piper was a stray kitty.

  22. Sarah July 23, 2009 at 3:51 pm #

    LOVE your kitty oatmeal.

I am a major, major animal lover, and adore pets of all shapes and sizes. I am ridiculously allergic to cats, but still have 3! My mom has volunteered to foster animals in our home for a no-kill shelter, so I like to think we’ve saved a few animal lives. (And brought a few more into ours!)

  23. Aaron @ CrossBorderCravings July 23, 2009 at 3:57 pm #

Aww, so cute! I LOVE animals!! I’m a huge dog fan because I grew up with one. I am slowly learning to love cats – its hard because I am allergic to them! :( I am dying to have my own pet though, I have to wait until I have a bigger place and a better budget!

  24. Amy July 23, 2009 at 7:06 pm #

MEOW! SO adorable. Put a kittenish smile upon my face =^.^=

    Rose,
That is the cutest bowl of oats I have ever seen. You’re amazing.

We rescued both our dogs after they were each abandoned in boxes – one outside a donut shop and the other was left on the doorstep of a vet. I swear they know in their hearts that we saved them as they act so grateful. They are the sweetest most loving creatures ever.

  26. traveleatlove July 23, 2009 at 8:52 pm #

Both of our cats are rescues, and growing up we fed many many stray cats. I volunteer at an animal shelter every weekend. I am an animal lover!

  27. burpexcuzme July 23, 2009 at 9:12 pm #

I once “rescued” a cat when I was young. Translated: I forced a stray cat who was perfectly happy being free into my house and tied a leash around her. She clawed, hissed, fought like crazy and after several scratches I just let her go. Oh well. Her loss. lol.

But I LOVE your kitty oatmeal! SOO damn cute!!!

  28. Rebeca July 23, 2009 at 11:53 pm #

Oooo poor kitty… I hope you guys can save him!

  29. broccolihut July 23, 2009 at 11:57 pm #

Those cashews are perfect for the signature feline smirk;)
The closest I’ve ever come to saving an animal is when my roommate and I found a puppy wandering on the street near the bus stop–not good! So we took him in to our apt and eventually reunited him with his owner.

  30. Ashley July 24, 2009 at 7:57 am #

The kitty oatmeal is soooo cute!

I used to be anti-cat, but not so much now that I own one. My cat has lots of personality, though, comes when she’s called and is very affectionate … almost like a dog. I’m always interested in others’ pets but I don’t always like them. My parents have a cat that’s pretty much just a waste of space.

I love dogs but I’ve been a bit afraid ever since I had a Great Dane grab my coat sleeve on a reporting assignment. Talk about terrifying! Its head was like, at my elbow — and I’m 5’8″. My parents also have this god-awful yellow lab mix that I cannot stand — it weighs like 90 pounds and is hyperactive. Ugh!

    I swear I like animals ….
