Book Project: BBME

16 Jul

Today I officially turned in my final book for my independent study. You’ve been seeing bits and pieces of it over the past few days, but now I’m ready to show the final, final product.

All wrapped up:

6.17.09 476

And then it turns into this:

6.17.09 465

This is an experimental CD case/book. Instead of just a few pockets,  you are able to open up to this very large map. The story is that there are these three guys on a roadtrip to a funeral. Each of them have had a relationship with the woman that’s died. Things happen before and during their trip that alter the course.

See, the center opens up into a CD. Each panel is labeled by number and song title. The idea is that you’d be playing the CD while reading along. The song reveals more about the story that you wouldn’t realize from the song.

6.17.09 472

The idea behind this project was to collaborate with others by using both my own design and writing. I am thankful that Bill’s band was up for the challenge and must give my friend Eric a big THANK YOU for letting me use his songs for my own project. Thanks, Eric!

Any time a song incorporated a place, I used a map like this:

6.17.09 467

Different things are written inside (by me) that are not necessarily revealed in the song but add to the story.

6.17.09 466

I used some multi-media in the project by asking my friends on Facebook for definitions of the word, “Burn.” Here’s what they came up with. Their names are credited at the end. I also shot a video that goes with song 8.

6.17.09 468

Here’s our lineup, and yes – I know I spelled ukulele wrong (and horribly so).

6.17.09 470

All closed up again, this time – the backside.

6.17.09 475

This book really took me out of my comfort zone. For starters, I was collaborating with musicians. Ideas were changed and shaped almost constantly. The hardest part seemed to be coming up with a story line that worked. All of these songs were written before the book project was born – so I, along with Bill and Eric, had to figure out a way to make this mesh. It took many hours of discussion before we came up to this list.

I am so happy I took a chance on creating a book like this. I think it’s the most different piece I’ve ever created, and it shows me that it’s really worth taking a chance. It also shows me that handmade looks good (in my opinion!)

rose!! this is such a beautiful project. i love that you took such a chance and it rewarded you so much. it’s a gorgeous, well thought out, very unique piece. almost like an adaptation since you started with songs that were already written, but you really found a way to create something so different and beautiful out of the old. congratulations on finishing!

maybe you can pass your spelling of ukulele off as poetic license. :)
