Dwellings

Don’t forget about the Old Bay Contest! There are still two days left to enter.

I didn’t blog last night or this morning because I forgot my camera at work. But I did prepare this special blog post in place of food.

This is a very random celebration, but I recently discovered that June 29 was somewhat of a holiday for me. That was the day that I’ve lived the longest in one place for the past six years. I’ve lived in a different apartment every year for the past six years. And this one, finally, is the one where I’m going to stay. At least until next summer!

In honor of this occasion, I dug deep in the archives of Facebook for some pictures of the various places I’ve lived since 2003. This brought back some memories – that’s for sure.

2003
I was a freshman in college and lived in a dorm room with a girl named Cat. We became roommates through a random connection (her sister was roommates with my then boyfriend’s sister – yes, random) and they set us up. It turned out to be the perfect match, as Cat and I remain the best of friends.

freshman year

This is the night we decided to body slam in the hallway using pillows attached by belts. Notice the various objects in the dorm room: wall covered in magazine photos of boys. I can see a picture of cantaloupe at my desk. And in fact, I can see a picture of myself dancing with a certain ex-boyfriend. Wow, flashback!

freshman year2

This was taken the same night and includes two of my favorite people – Cat and Kelly. Ironically, it was also taken in the dorm room right above us and right beside Bill’s dorm room.

2004

Sophomore year of college, Cat and I decided that yes – we would still remain roommates and BFFs and yes – we would stay in the dorms. A couple of our friends moved out, but the majority stayed. We got a “corner room,” which was kind of a big deal. You had to wait in line for it and the room was dramatically bigger. This is Jess, who lived in the room before us, passing it down, so to speak.

soph year

This was taken the first week of class – we were so excited not only to live together again but also to have this awesome futon.

2005

Cat and I decided to live in different places that year, but that didn’t mean we stopped hanging out. In fact, some of the most ridiculous things happened in my junior year apartment with her – and she wasn’t even living there. This was the year I moved in with five other girls and lived in one heck of a house.

This was the same year that Cat came over for lunch, and we almost lit the place on fire.

That apartment was good times, all the time.

2006

Cat and I decided to move in together again for our senior year of college. We found a beautiful half of a house that had two bedrooms and ample room. Honestly, it was the dream house of all college houses. Sure, it was old, but it was probably twice the size of the apartment I live in now. Here are some random photos from that place:

Check out my bedroom. Lloyd Dobler on the wall. My beautiful blanket curtain. Tons of junk on the floor, and I’m working my waitressing outfit.

We had a great yard and occasionally played baseball. Until we broke many windows:

This house made me so very happy.

And made Bill and Cat want to dance:

2007

This was the year Bill and I made the big move to DC and lived in a 500 square foot box for one year. It was cheap living, let me tell you.

2007-1

Notes: I am eating a salad and drinking a diet iced tea in this picture. What you don’t see? Behind that bookcase (and if you notice, there is a black shower curtain hung up) is our bed. We lived in a studio apartment, and that’s how we separated the room. See:

The smallest place I’ve ever lived in.

2008 – Present

Bill and I moved a mile away from the tiny apartment and now live in a comfortable one-bedroom apartment. You may remember the tour I did here.

This is actually my favorite picture of our apartment, and neither Bill nor I is in the picture. At least Scone is there, with our friend Marie.

Recap

  • 6 places, 6 years
  • I also lived with my parents, aunt and in Cambridge, England for three summers
  • I’ve lived with Cat longer than Bill
  • This is the first apartment I’ve lived in longer than 1 year

Here’s hoping the next move is into a sparkly house :)

i love this post! i’ve moved all over the place too in the past 6 years – it’s interesting to think about life in terms of the apartments you lived in.

ps: your tiny first apartment looks about the size of my current one. ny is a silly place sometimes.
