Wedding Books
13 Apr
I’m interrupting normal food blogging to put some Lobster Books on display. Remember last week when I said I was working frantically on a project? Well, here are the fruits of my labor.
Two wedding albums for two lovely couples – Amy and Brian, who got married just last week, and Rob and Kate, who got married in December.
Brian and Amy’s Wedding Book
For months I have been toying around with the idea of making a book out of bottle caps. I started collecting caps at the parties I went to and by April, I had enough to make not only one book – but three.
This book was for Amy and Brian due to their love of wine and beer. Not only that, but Brian supplied me with most – if not all – of these bottle caps, so I thought he and Amy would enjoy looking through them all and remembering good times. I made this book using the stab bind method (which secures the book on the left hand side, rather than the middle).
The book is also an album because instead of using printer paper, I went to Michael’s and bought scrapbooking photo sheets. I had hoped to find pages that held individual 4 x 6 photos, but this is all I could find. I figure they can put two photos on each page. Or one and include some writing.
Under the layer of bottle caps is some decorative paper I bought from Utrecht. It has a very earthy effect and is almost a little rough to the touch. I think of Amy and Brian as down to earth, so when I think of colors that represent them – earth tones came to mind.
Materials used: binding board, decorative paper, Mod Podge, twine string, bottle caps, wine corks, super glue, hot glue
End Result: I was really happy with the way this book turned out. What I had in mind from the beginning was also the result, and that is something that rarely happens. The only thing that was a twinge different was that I used twine to bind the book. I hadn’t originally thought of that. But I liked the way it looked after I was done, and I think it helped secure the book better. Though I think this book is a little delicate, I do think it will hold up. Plus I gave Amy and Brian a tube of super glue just in case!
Rob and Kate’s Wedding Book
When Rob and Kate were getting married in December, I had wished so much that I had made them a book. Things were super busy at that time of year, so I didn’t get around to it in time for the wedding but did write on the card that a book would be “coming soon.” This book has been in the works for about a month or so, and Amy and Brian’s party gave me the push to finally complete it!
The book for Kate and Rob was very much based not only on their classy nature as a couple but also the elegance of their wedding. Their colors were black and white with red accents, so I definitely wanted to use these colors for their wedding album. The two bottle caps are actually from the homemade beer they served as favors at their wedding. After this photo was taken, I wrote “R” on the left cap and “K” on the right cap.
The inside is exactly the same as Brian and Amy’s, as I used the same scrapbooking photo paper!
I had originally intended on making red the primary color, but the look just wasn’t right with a red background. I also didn’t intend on binding the book with this ribbon – I mainly wanted to use it just across the front and back like this. But when I bound the book with lighter string, it didn’t hold well, and I was worried it would fall apart.
Materials used: binding board, decorative paper (two types), Mod Podge, string, hot glue and bottle caps (2).
End Result: This book turned out very differently than I originally intended! For starters, I wasn’t going to highlight red. Secondly, I didn’t want to bind the side with the same ribbon that ran across the front because I thought it might be too much. Third, I wanted the book to tie on the side – but when I looked it, it was just too much ribbon, so I ended up cutting and gluing it on the inside. I also meant to wrap the lace under the inside layer of black paper – but I wasn’t paying attention while gluing! It’s all the little things you realize that other people probably don’t!
