Brain Food Oatmeal

18 Mar

This morning I could tell that Bill had stayed up late working on a paper. My picture-taking-place-of-choice was a wreck.

Much to my surprise, the lobster placemat was in use. Not the tastiest thing I’ve ever seen on there but at least it’s pretty.

Seeing this pile-up made me wonder what type of oatmeal I’d want if I was studying. Looking through the bare cupboards, I found a few essential items for my brain power.

For me, it’s all about simplicity. No need to overload the bowl (especially if you have an overloaded brain at the time!). I stuck with banana oats, flaxseed, pecans, PB on spoon and orange juice.

You can do pretty powerful things on less than you thought. There’s no need for constant glitz and glam. I would have to say that’s what this bowl is going for. It’s certainly humble.

What’s your brain food? What helps get you going?

I need to start every day off with a bowl of oatmeal. Plain and simple.

…. and coffee certainly perks me up :)

My brain food is tuna or eggs! Before a big test, my mom always scrambles some eggs for me and it never failed :)

    Rose,
I couldn’t agree more. I used to actually write out lists of things to add to my oatmeal so I wouldn’t forget all the ingredients. Crazy talk. Now, I like my oats straight up cooked in water with nut butter or raw nuts on top. So simple and delish. That being said, I do like to doctor them up if I’m eating them for dessert. :)

    Have a good day!

Eggs is totally my brain food… ever since my mom used to make them for me before a big test, I always have to have them!

Believe it or not, my favorite brain food before a test is smoked salmon on pumpernickel. Barring that, egg on whole grain toast is a good substitute.

I love your simple oats. That’s what I like too – not too many overwhelming flavors make good brain food.

I had an elementary school teacher who told us that peppermint “opened up brain pathways,” whatever that means, so I’ve gotten in the habit of sucking on starlight mints or Lifesavers peppermints while I study. Or, put that in past tense actually – guess I’m in denial about not being in college anymore!

I love that Bill studies garbage.

  23. jama March 18, 2009 at 11:27 pm #

Ok the secret is out… my child studies garbage. Proud mom and happy that he eats much better and more veggies due to Rose. Also proud that I taught him to cook (he had to help cook at least one meal per week with me since he was a kid). Thanks to Rose’s blog – we feel more connected to both of you! xo
