Horned Melon Oatmeal

26 Feb

On a Lobster Placemat is featuring a very special guest for breakfast today: the horned melon.

If you’ve ever done research on the horned melon, you’ll find that it doesn’t matter which way you cut it. Just make sure your melon is fresh and ready to eat - which can be judged by its outside appearance.

I sort of think this is the type of fruit that gets a bad rap due to its slimy and green interior. But it can do wonderful things to a bowl of oatmeal.

I squeezed one half of the melon into my oats while cooking and used the other half for garnish. I then ate one of the leftover pieces – just to see what it was like. It didn’t have a strong taste to me, just more of a strong texture.

From what I’ve read, you can eat the seeds. But it still felt weird to me, seeing them boppin’ about in my oats. I ate ‘em just the same and again, didn’t notice a huge burst or change of flavor in my oats.

Many other people in the blog world have been experimenting with horned melons too. My review is pretty in line with the rest.

Definitely beautiful. But not worth the effort (of eating) and money ($5/melon!).

What is a food item you’ve been wanting to try and haven’t? OR What is the most exotic food you’ve ever had?

I’ve never tried it, it looks good! I’m all about texture when it comes to food.

I want to try turtle soup…I’ve heard it’s good (but only once because I think they’re cute and all)

It seems like a lot of people are buzzing about kumquats, so I’m definitely looking out for those!

I had one of those recently! It was good but kind of bland, like a banana to me. I enjoyed the texture, but i agree, I wouldn’t buy it again. And it was really hard to eat!

It kind of scares me, but if it tastes good who cares!

I have always been curious about the horned melon! They sit right next to the kiwi’s (yummm)in my grocery store and I frequently get the urge to just pick one up and toss it like a grenade :)

Hi Rose!! Ooooh that is a cool yet interesting fruit. I’d definitely like to dig my spoon into it to see how juicy it is!! haha YES $5 a melon is quite steep. I think I’d go for….a cantaloupe instead. :P Nevertheless, a GOOOORGEOUS bowl of oats!

Occasionally I buy produce just because it looks weird. Such was the case with the horned melon. I didn’t actually know what it was and I had to google how to eat it. I have to admit, the texture kind of grossed me out, but at least I tried.

love it! i’ve had alligator – does that count?

I was pulling for Carla, too – I wish her souffles would have turned out! I think she might have won if they had.

Thanks for the link to my site! I think besides the horned melon I tried the other day…I tried baby octopus last week. It was a little freaky and had the consistency of a rubber band. I didnt have my camera – but my friends did – so I am trying to get the pictures from them. I try things like that just to say that I have. :)

Sorry that the horned melon didn’t measure up! But at least it added visual appeal, right?

I’ve been curious to try chayote squash…

That horned melon looks too cute! The most exotic food I’ve ever had was in China. I couldn’t tell you exactly what I was eating because I don’t speak Chinese/Mandarin, but I can tell you it was all very tasty. Except for the scorpions. I didn’t try those :o )
