Snowfall Oats

27 Jan

It’s the first official snowfall in Maryland/Washington, DC. I say “official” because the snow is actually sticking to the ground.

I must say I am not a fan of winter. I think that’s why trying to replicate the snowstorm outside in my oatmeal didn’t work out so well. That and the fact that I have very few white ingredients in my house right now. But I tried!

Today’s new ingredient (serving as snow) was Wheat Bran. I have had a bag in my pantry for months and never touched it. I thought I’d give it a whirl for something different.

The flaky appearance and texture of wheat bran is appealing to me. I think it’s pretty in its own way. I also mixed in some blueberries with my oats, hence the darker oat bottom of the bowl.

Question: What’s your favorite winter/snow activity? Any good memories of past?

When I was a kid, we used to sled ride down the road near my grandmother’s house on runner sleds. We’d wax the blades to get them as sharp as possible, and one of us would be a look out at the end of the road to yell if there were cars. We would sled ride down that road for hours – especially at night. That was our favorite time to go. It was completely dangerous (we suffered a few injuries), but fun and it is one of my most vivid memories from childhood.

Even though I hate the snow, I really do enjoy sledding. It is so fun flying down the hill and taking a big old digger in the snow at the end. Those are the times that make me feel like a kid again.

Where in MD/DC are you? I live near Blacksburg, so we’re not too far away!

It’s snowing here a little, too, but I think we’re supposed to get more ice than snow :(

I used to LOVE when my mom would make “snow cream” – aka, ice cream made with snow. It was SO good, and we could only have it if we got enough snow that we could take the “clean” snow off the ground.

That, and building snowmen, then having hot chocolate inside by the fire to warm up afterwards :)

I’m not a fan of snow, it’s nice to look at but I hate being outside in it.
Although when i was younger we found a pond in the woods in my parent’s backyard and we used to go ice skating on it. I loved that.

As a kid it was sledding. :D My grandma had lots of land and it was all downhill, sledding on that was amazing. :D

Now it’s running, I love running in the snow! But admittedly I’m ready for the snow to stop.

I love the snow! I wish it snowed here more often. I love going for walks while it’s still snowing, because the sound of everything gets muffled and it’s so peaceful (plus I think there are less people on the roads, which helps the peacefulness).

Just an icy, wet mess in Charlottesville right now. I’m hoping we’ll get some significant snow tonight!

I grew up in Florida, so snow wasn’t a big part of my winters. However, my parents used to turn our sprinklers on overnight when it was going to be below freezing and I would wake up to a winter wonderland. LOVED it!!!
