I went to Pennsylvania this weekend for our family reunion and made beer bread and french honey bread.
They went over pretty well! My Uncle Jack and Aunt Martha were particularly impressed, and they make their bread from scratch (no machine). Even though the bread machine does the work, I still took this as a compliment.
On the way to Pennsylvania, Bill and I stopped at our favorite weekend breakfast spot: Kirsten’s Cafe. I often get cravings for an egg sammy made on an everything bagel. I had to eat in the Jeep while Bill drove as we left a tad late:
And then she snapped a close-up photo of me:
All in all – a great weekend. I didn’t eat particularly well, but I’m back home and ready to go this week. Oh, and how could I forget about the family auction? Bill and I snagged the following items for our new place:
A photo of tulips taken by my Aunt Pat, a set of 4 brandy glasses (2 shown here), homemade blueberry-raspberry wine, a nice little clay pot, a shell-shaped candy dish, and a new plant that we’ve named Muriel.
I am spent, and Bill has been cleaning the kitchen for nearly 45 minutes (which is rare..) Time for bed!

Bill and I are going to Pennsylvania for the weekend and decided we needed to use the asparagus quick! I found a recipe for Asparagus Frittata here. It was fantastic, a bit too salty, but that’s how I like it. Next time we’ll cut the salt down to 1/2 teaspoon for Bill. This was the perfect meal post lifting and running at the gym. WSC didn’t have air conditioning yesterday, and I didn’t realize this until about five minutes into my run. I kept going, drenched when I hit the weight bench. I treated myself to a Whole Foods trip afterward
Ah, vegetables and air conditioning.
I wanted to start this blog by mentioning that I am an opportunistic vegetarian. If the opportunity presents itself, I will eat vegetarian. It just so happens that cooking in my own kitchen gives me the option every night! Don’t get me wrong – I still like chicken and fish. But I won’t touch red meat (too many years of growing up on my grandparents’ farm…) Thankfully I have Morning Star Crumblers to fill me like some red meat would (and honestly, I think it tastes so much better!)
(Boyfriend) Bill and I have deemed Tuesday night as Tofu night. It seems Tuesday nights encompass everything I love – Kickboxing class, Tofu, and open mic night at the College Perk Coffee House. Tonight Bill cooked while I was at the gym. I have discovered that the best thing about the Washington Sports Club in Silver Spring is the Whole Foods across the street. I stopped there on Sunday morning and randomly bought some bok choy, something I’ve been meaning to cook since watching Top Chef more than a year ago. Bill made it using this recipe.
This morning I made a museli of sorts with a mishmash of items from Laura’s refridgerator: Peach Yogurt, Organic 1% milk, a Flax and Oats packet that was hiding among the Oatmeal and a few blueberries on top. I chilled for fifteen minutes in the refridgerator. It was much better than it looks in this picture, though the blueberries were a little, eh. I was surprised that the peach and blueberry combo didn’t turn out horribly though!
I am looking for ideas on what to take to my family reunion this Saturday in Pennsylvania. It can be healthy, but it needs to be disguised as something that isn’t. No one will eat it otherwise
I’m traveling 3.5 hours. Any ideas on things that will last that long?
After 20 minutes of trying with Howard, I decided to make dinner. Laura had chicken in the fridge and some brown rice on the counter for me. I mixed this up using only soy sauce and some frozen veggies. Make due with what you have! I am now enjoying that same glass of wine as featured in the photo.
I will post pictures of the cats tomorrow. The internet is going slow…
